WEST SACRAMENTO, CA (MPG) – Training approximately 900 players ranging from children and youth ages 4–18, the West Sacramento Competitive Soccer Club (WSSC) has assembled a dynamic team of volunteers including seasoned coaches, family members, and friends to open soccer season with the common goal of fostering a sense of unity and pride among our greater community and encouraging our youth to pursue their dreams in competitive sports. 

The West Sacramento Competitive Soccer Club will be celebrating the inaugural Opening Day Kick-a-Thon on Saturday, August 26, 2023, from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. at Summerfield Park, located at 2950 Linden Rd.  The event will be graced by the participation of local dignitaries and special guest; professional soccer player, Rodrigo “RoRo” Lopez, adding a touch of grandeur to this occasion. As a token of gratitude to our community’s warm embrace, the event will be free to attend, inviting families, friends, and soccer enthusiasts to join in the celebration.

Participation in the Kick-a-Thon itself is free of charge to any WSSC competitive and recreational player registered for the 2023-24 season between the ages of 9-18.  There is also an open adult division for those 18+ years of age wishing to show-off their soccer abilities.  To plan accordingly, every Kick-a-Thon participant must pre-register by visiting: https://forms.gle/Topur22xomF2svS2A.    

Since our club is completely run by volunteers, registered participants are soliciting pledges to help our fundraising efforts.  If you would like to make a general donation please go to: https://app.99pledges.com/fund/westsacomp/west-sac-comp-volunteers.  All proceeds will help offset costs of training gear, referees, field maintenance, tournaments, and more.  Most importantly, these funds will allow us to offer player scholarships for local families who may otherwise not have the financial means to participate in competitive sports. 

Each registered participant will receive 10 shots on goal with predetermined points given for upper and lower corner goals, and a commemorative T-shirt sponsored by our very own West Sacramento Police Department.  The player with the most points for each age group (9-11, 12-14, and 15-18) wins:

1^st place - $150
2^nd place - $100
3^rd place - $50

Adult Open Division participants will have a chance to win a custom WSSC metal artwork piece, hand-crafted WSSC woodwork, or a $250 gift card to DICK’S Sporting Goods.

The youth player receiving the highest dollar amount in pledges will receive a $200 Target gift card thanks to a generous donation from our local Southport Town Center Target and the team with the highest percentage of players participating in the Kick-a-Thon will receive a hosted pizza party by our gracious donor, Marco’s Pizza after one of their practices.  

The event promises an array of engaging activities for fans of all ages, including:

Food provided by ¡Ay Jalisco! Taqueria with a portion of the proceeds coming back to our club; Dunk Tank – Players and community members receive 3 attempts for $5 to dunk coaches and the ever so popular referees; Kona Ice will help keep us cool while donating a share of their earnings from the event; Raffle Prizes ranging from a Nintendo Switch Lite with a Mario Bros. game, a charcoal grill donated by West Sac’s Lowe’s Home Improvement to vouchers from our local and surrounding area favorites such as Kick n’ Mule, Tsuki Sushi, Tina’s Hair & Nail Spa, Lenise’s, Savoury, Fid’s Smog and Tune, Ray Mata’s Barber Shop, Mountain Mike’s Pizza, Pure-N-Fit Training, River Cats, Le Five Indoor Soccer, Pure Form Training (PFT) West Sacramento, Vierra Farms, Heringer Estates Family Vineyards and Winery, and more… ; Mingle with local soccer families to hear more about how to get involved with our club and keep our local youth engaged in something positive while instilling healthy habits.
