GRIDLEY, CA (MPG) – Kicking-off Homecoming activities for Gridley High School Homecoming week, the senior ladies took on the juniors in the long-standing tradition of the football follies flag game, also known as powder puff.
Senior girls wore black with their graduation year 23’ as the number on each of their jerseys, while the juniors followed suit, wearing number 24’ in white.
According to Principal Rikki-Lee Burresch, a lot of hard work and training went into this game. Both seniors and juniors put in serious hours of practice, led by their coaches, the boys football team. Burresch shared that both the senior and junior girls had been practicing relentlessly for the last two weeks in preparation for the game.
With that said, the seniors got off to a dominating start, with Gracie Dunning running in a touchdown and putting the first numbers up on the scoreboard early in the game. The seniors would continue to control the field and possession, giving the juniors’ offense very little opportunities.
The seniors went into halftime with a 14-0 lead over the juniors. The highly entertaining halftime show was provided by the junior and senior boys cheerleading squads, under the direction of the ladies cheerleading squad.
Flips, high flying stunts and some questionable dance moves had the audience and ladies’ teams rolling with laughter from their hilarious antics.
As the flag football game continued and the stakes were raised, the ladies got increasingly more physical, especially between the defensive lines. For a non-contact sport, a decent amount was made throughout the game.
With five minutes left on the scoreboard, the seniors brought the score to 22-0 with another touchdown. The juniors would put forward a valiant effort, but the seniors would get the ball once more, clinching the win with another score to ultimately win 28-0.
